Here are the types of author school visits I can provide:
Writing Activity - I will work with your class to talk about the parts of a story, and we work to make one up together. We will choose what we want to fill in all the elements of the story as a group, then teachers can either use that as a prompt for narrative writing or an introduction to their own assignment. I will also have a lesson plan that can be adapted that will include the West Virginia College and Career Readiness Standards covered for your grade.
Book Discussion - If your class has either read or been read to from any of my books, we can hold a discussion, Q & A, or talk about the writing process. I will have some story points that could be used as writing prompts after the visit, such as how a character or their actions were viewed by the reader compared to my intention as the writer.
Publishing Process - I could visit older classes and show different avenues in publishing (self-published, traditional, hybrid) work and what can reasonably be expected from them. I can also discuss my broadcasting experience and make it a whole media presentation.
The Grinch - I will wear my Grinch costume and read How the Grinch Saved Christmas or any other book that may be relevant to your class. I can also pose for pictures, walk the hallways, or do any other thing you may want a costumed character to do. I will gladly share the spotlight with other costumed characters, as well.
Little Kevin - I will bring Little Kevin, my leopard tortoise, to your class for a visit. He is highly interactive with students. I will provide a worksheet students can complete after we leave about the parts of a tortoise and other facts they may learn. I have one activity for younger classes and one for older ones.
Ukulele - I play a little ukulele and have a whole book of Christmas songs I can lead. I’m not the greatest singer, but most people overlook that when it comes to holiday tunes. I’ll bring it to conclude any visit that comes close to Christmastime.
School Volunteer - I have come to schools to volunteer for any activity that needs a member of the community. I’ve helped at book fairs, career day, the Get a Life Program, spoken at Young Writers awards, and judged during quiz bowl.
***I will ask for the opportunity to sell my books as part of some of these visits. That can either be pre-sale or the day of the event. If anyone buys a class set (25 or more) of any of my titles, I will come with no strings attached.***
